Dedicated to the memory of Lawrence Fisher

This site is a tribute to Lawrence. He is much loved and will always be remembered.

Lawrence Neil Fisher was born on the 16th July 1936 in Carlisle. He grew up in Carlisle with his loving sister Heather and excelled at school ending up going to Carlisle Grammar School then on to train as an accountant doing his articles in London where he met and subsequently married Sandra.

He loved his sport, mainly rugby, swimming & especially cycling. He competed in cycling events all over the country, winning medals and trophies during his time. When he died he was writing a book comparing the training methods and equipment of cyclists in the 1950s and 1960s to the present day. He also enjoyed watching cycling events in person & on tv. He used to love visiting his son in Manchester and going to watch competitions at the velodrome. He was also so proud every time he was invited by Border City Wheelers to important cycling events in the area.

Lawrence and Sandra had 3 children. Stephen born in 1969, Emma born in 1972 and Charlotte born in 1978. The children have happy memories growing up. The children remember fancy dress parties their parents attended as well as dinner parties and the joy of the parents being surrounded by good friends.

Lawrence used to for many years volunteer in the tourist information office on a Saturday. Assisting people with finding accommodation and things to do in Carlisle and surrounding area. He was a human TripAdvisor! In 1981 this led to Lawrence and Sandra purchasing a house in Howard Place & starting Howard House Guest House.

Like anything Lawrence did this turned out successful. In 1985 Lawrence’s helpfulness at volunteering was recognised and he won an award by the English tourist board along side a prize of a 3 week trip to Toronto in 1986.

Lawrence loved local politics and enjoyed representing the people. He became a governor of Brook Street School and later chairman of governors and served with them for some 20 odd years. He was extremely proud of being part of the school. With his love of local politics Lawrence represented Carlisle City and later Cumbria County Council. When he died Lawrence had been on Cumbria County Council since 2007. He met so many friends over the many years of being involved as a councillor and school governor. Lawrence also looked fondly back on the time when his wife Sandra was deputy mayor of Carlisle and then later mayor of Carlisle where he supported her in the many public duties they attended in that 2 year period. Sandra sadly passed away in 2008.

Lawrence’s other big passion was family history. He helped others in their journey of tracing ancestors. He managed to trace his right back to the 1600s all over the word.

Lawrence loved a party and loved organising every year his birthday party with his sister Heather. Only days earlier before he passed he spoke to his sister Heather informing  her where he wanted his party to be held for his wake.

Lawrence was so very caring and would do anything to help anyone, he had a great sense of humour but could also be extremely stubborn and would often stand his ground in an argument very passionately. He adored his grandchildren and loved school holidays where he would take them on trips out to different museums, the zoo, parks and Dino land.

Lawrence Fisher was a loving husband to Sandra,
a great father to Stephen, Emma and Charlotte
an amazing granddad to Lauren and Charlie, Alex, Jason, Daniel, Nikki , Christian and Cai. A role model to his sons in law Stephen and Dimitri. A loving brother to his sister Heather and friend to her husband Bill.

He died peacefully in his sleep with his family by his side on the 6th June and will be missed by all. But his family take comfort in how many positive impacts he had on people’s lives over the years. One less star shines in Carlisle from now on.
